*Entry-level hiring is down 6%!

…at least that’s what seems to be the case based on some interesting LinkedIn data recently released on their website. Although that’s a number that beats midlevel hiring (which is reportedly down 10%), the LI data also highlighted how Gen Z workers are responding to this job market challenge – i.e. “they’re not just sitting around and waiting for a traditional 9-to-5 role.” Check out these fact bytes from the LI data….

  • Approximately a fifth of younger workers, 21%, have started a business or or using a side hustle to kickstart their career.
  • 22% are building their own apps, websites or getting involved in other technology projects to showcase their skills.
  • 72% of young office workers are looking into switching careers into the skilled trades (ex. electrician, mechanic or construction worker) 12% have already made the switch.
  • 32% of the Gen Z group are taking roles outside their fields in order to build in-demand skills.

So if you’re a Gen X having an issue finding a job, we hope you find it good to know you’re not alone. Its also interesting to see what your peers are doing about this challenge!

The Linked In survey is based on a sample of 1,000 respondents within the first three years of their career (ages 18-29) across the US. Data was collected between March 17 and March 23 of 2026.
